Housing

Individuals with HIV/AIDS who have access to stable housing are more likely to live longer and less likely to infect others. Period.

According to the North American Housing and HIV/AIDS Research Summit Series, individuals with HIV/AIDS who are homeless or living in unstable housing situations are more likely to enter HIV care late, to be hospitalized, and to have higher viral loads; are less likely to receive and adhere to antiretroviral therapy; and are at greater risk of dying.

Without a doubt, there is a compelling case for providing housing for individuals with HIV/AIDS.

Lifelong’s Housing Program serves as the central source for accessing and referring clients into appropriate housing.  Lifelong does not own housing units.  Instead, we partner with non-profit and for-profit owners of affordable housing. Through this partnership, housing providers benefit in many ways:

  • Lifelong refers eligible clients to HIV-dedicated units within their properties;
  • Lifelong provides case management services and connections to medical care for each client referred to an HIV-dedicated unit;
  • Lifelong administers rent subsidies to keep the operations of our housing partners running smoothly.

Housing Provider Partnerships
Lifelong’s housing program benefits from the many successful partnerships we have with private landlords who own market rate housing.  

The majority of the units that serve our clients are owned and managed by the following nonprofit organizations including those that operate affordable housing intended for lower income hard working individuals and families, as well as housing that serves severely disabled and homeless individuals and families.

Emergency, Transitional, and Permanent Housing
Depending on the unique circumstances of the individual, Lifelong offers three different housing options: emergency, transitional, and permanent, for clients. All individuals must meet the following eligibility requirements for the program.

  1. Applicant must be homeless or rent burdened (meaning, must be paying 50% of their income towards rent)
  2. Must have an HIV/AIDS diagnosis
  3. Must be living in King, Island or Snohomish County
  4. Must be living at 50% below Average Median Income  ($30,000 - $50,000 per year depending on family size)

Lifelong's housing program does not operate on a "first come, first serve" basis. Instead, we use a priority based wait list so that the most medically vulnerable individuals are able to access housing quickly. The application process includes:

  1. Fill out a housing program application with your medical case manager or social worker or call our office to set up an appointment with a housing case manager who will work with you to complete the program application.  If you have questions about the housing program or need more information about it, you can send a message to Lifelong's Housing Program.
  2. Applicant is entered onto a waitlist.
  3. Once your name comes up, you will be referred to a case manager for an in-person assessment. They will guide you through the process of transitioning into your new home.
