Insurance Program

For people diagnosed with HIV or AIDS, having insurance can literally mean the difference between life and death.

We know that one of the most effective ways to manage an individual’s illness is by adhering to treatment and medicine prescribed by a doctor. But what if you don’t have insurance? Or if you do – how do you figure out if your medications are covered? How expensive are co-pays? How does the Affordable Care Act impact medical coverage for HIV and AIDS meds?

Program Details

The Evergreen Health Insurance Program (EHIP) pays insurance premiums for people living with HIV and AIDS who otherwise might not be able to afford it on their own. People need access to their medications, to their doctor’s appointments, to their care. A person’s ability to manage his or her health impacts everything else in that person’s life—quality of life, ability to work, as well as their mental health and emotional well-being.

Lifelong covered $8,397,020 worth of medical insurance premiums for 2,119 Washington residents with HIV/AIDS in 2014.  By paying medical insurance or taking over the premiums they could no longer afford, we are able to connect people who have HIV/AIDS with the vital, life-sustaining medicine they need to survive.

What We Believe

The following guides our work at Lifelong, and in EHIP:

  • Healthcare is not a privilege but a right, especially for those who need it most. We do not think that people should have to choose between paying rent or paying for their insurance. Believe it or not, this happens more than you think.
  • Each of our clients should have their best chance at living the healthiest life possible. Getting them on the right insurance plan to manage their HIV care is what we do.
  • Our clients are strong and smart and capable. Sometimes they don’t have all the answers. That’s why we’re here. Our expertise is in the area of insurance programs for people living with HIV or AIDS. Our clients need help answering questions about their insurance. We get them answers.

Working to Prevent New HIV Infections

When a person living with HIV or AIDS is on medication and has a suppressed viral load, they are much less likely to pass the disease on to someone else. So by supporting HIV positive individuals and increasing their access to medication and insurance plans, we are impacting the health of the overall community by minimizing the risk of new infections.

In addition to paying insurance premiums for people living with HIV or AIDS, we also support HIV negative individuals by paying the premiums for clients enrolled in the PrEP DAP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Drug Assistance Program). PrEP is a way for people who do not have HIV but who are at substantial risk of infection to prevent HIV infection by taking a pill. This program covers medication for eligible individuals, regardless of whether they are insured. Washington is the only state in the nation to offer this HIV prevention program.
