Lifelong Thrift Moving to New Broadway Location in 2015
Seattle - Lifelong is excited to announce that their Capitol Hill based retail store, Lifelong Thrift, will relocate to 312 Broadway E in the space formerly occupied by Red Light. The move will occur in early 2015.
The ending of the lease at the current location on Union Street provided Lifelong with an opportunity to seek out a new location that could accommodate an increase in inventory as well as raise more money for Lifelong’s programs. The new Broadway location is 12,500 square feet — almost three times the size of the current location. Lifelong Thrift sales benefit Lifelong’s work delivering services to people living with chronic illnesses, including HIV/AIDS.
“We are so excited about this move and what it means for the community,” says Tamara Asakawa, Lifelong Thrift’s Executive Director. “We will now have so much more room to sell which will allow us to help more people. And that’s an amazing thing.”
The Lifelong Thrift has been a fixture in the Capitol Hill neighborhood since the 1980s and has been at its current location for 13 years. It is one of the few, if not the only, thrift stores in Seattle that offers a voucher program to HIV positive individuals in need of basic living essentials, like warm coats, dishes, or even an outfit to wear to a job interview.
The thrift store is also a popular shopping destination for the fashionably frugal. It has developed a reputation for carrying unique items ranging from a mint condition baby grand piano to vintage designer bags. The thrift store made national headlines in 2014 for outfitting Denver’s mayor as part of a lost Super Bowl bet (though Lifelong considers that a win for Denver’s mayor, not a loss).
The new space will allow for more space for furniture, household goods, and the popular boutique section that carries more high-end designer apparel. Plans are underway to offer a donation pick-up service.
**The thrift store is holding a donation drive from December 15th – December 31st. Donate one bag of gently used clothing or household goods and receive a coupon for 25% off a single item good for the opening week at the new location. Donations may be dropped off during regular business hours at their current location at 1017 E Union Street.**
